This came through as a California sparkler, but with a bit less complexity and character than others in the flight. Tasting notes: "Red apple, butter, falls a bit short"; "lots of fruit, some residual sugar, citrus and tropical"; "great flavors, lacks sufficient acidity."

Locally grown Champagne won't burst your bubble...
"Nicely rich in character and on the plump, open side owing to its high pinot noir content, this attractive bottling is spot on in its foamy, lush mousse and its yeasty, fruit-supported flavors. Its crisp, decently lengthy finish is exactly what one would expect to find in a good non-vintage brut."

"This pale pink wine's large percentage of Pinot is plainly evident in the slightly cherry-like bias of its very fresh and vital young aromas and comes through clearly in the crisp, but patently fruity flavors that follow. While graced with subtle touches of autolyzed yeast, this one is driven first and foremost by fruit, and its gentle, fairly refined bubbles lend it a certain elegant touch."

"This shows a lovely nose with fresh apple fruit notes intertwined with subtly yeasty backnotes, followed by an equally appealing texture from energetic but soft effervescence, along with broadly textured fruit that has a creamy aspect. There's some notable fruity sweetness in the finish, but it is nicely counterbalanced by fresh acidity. This isn't an austere style of Blanc de Blancs, but rather a generously juicy, freshly fruity style that makes for dynamite cocktail sipping. "100 percent Chardonnay; two years aging on the yeast. Nice, ripe, pure, pear and melon flavors; teeny bubbles; good acidic grip; crisp, minerally, well-knit finish."
Quarterly Review of Wines, Winter 2005/2006
"Fresh, clean and nicely yeasted, this wine offers glints of lemons and chalk in its light, quietly floral aromas. Its bubbles are frothy and lively, and there is a decent bit of fruit to the thinly citrusy, green appley flavors. Slightly candied and crisp at the finish, this one is pleasant but a touch limited."

"Smells like a Meyer lemon tree ready to pick, with zesty, floral citrus aromas, with hints of ripe pear and hazelnut, yet unlike some sparklers, this one keeps gaining momentum, with tingly acidity keeping the flavors dancing. Drink now through 2009."
Wine Spectator, November 30, 2004
"Pale gold hue with active small bubbles. Aromas of ripe apple, white flowers and brioche. Lively acidity frames ample flavors of apple jam, lemon and caramel. Sharp close."
The Wine News December/January 2004-05
"...this rich and creamy offering is a bit more open and accessible than many of its genre, and it allows its Chardonnay fruit and youthful energy to take center stage in a most convincing display...this one will be a fine mate to lighter fish and shellfish preparations now and over the next few years."

Royal Cuvee is usually Gloria Ferrer's best bubbly, and so it is with this bottling, a worthy followup to the past several vintages. Very finely structured, it shows appealing flavors of cherries, citrus fruits and vanilla, and is so rich, it's almost like a table wine. Addictively good now. "California sparklers. California sparkling wine producers are not trying to replicate Champagne. Instead, they're striving to make sparkling wines that express California's specific soils and climate. Because of California's significantly warmer climate, its sparkling wines are generally riper, fruitier, and fuller in body than their French counterparts. Gloria Ferrer's 1996 Royal Cuvee (around $28) is toasty and beautifully textured with nice white fruit notes..."
Anthony Dias Blue, KFWB & WCBS Lifestyle Minute, December 27, 2005

"Made primarily from Pinot Noir with a little Chardonnay, this has a subtle color of the first blush on a peach, and is fragrant and delicious. The fruit flavors of raspberries and cherries have a lime tinge, and the finish is dry and impressively long. Really easy to like, just filled with charm and finesse."

95 POINTS - EDITOR'S CHOICE
"This is the winery's most expensive bottling, a late disgorged bubbly that has now seen a decade of age. It shows the elegant polish of the '97 Royal Cuvee, but is superior even to it in richness. The creamy smoothness is the star attraction, but so are the subtle citrus, raspberry, brioche and vanilla flavors. Impeccably dry balance guarantees that this beautiful brut will age effortlessly for 10 years, if not longer. Editor's Choice."

90 PTS "There is a distinct autolyzed, toasty edge to the aromas of this effort, and they are joined in the nose by a somewhat simple lemon-lime fruit quality that is a bit at odds with its more mature parts. That noted, the wine has plenty of energy and finely bubbled mousse, and its flavors hit all the expected marks of citrus, chalky, creamy richness and bright fruit and vitality. Its handsome, refined package makes it a good choice for celebratory evenings."

"Uncorking the eye-catching bottle unleashes an array of flavors. Things Asian come to mind like ginger; and from New Zealand, kiwi. A strong backbone and robust character is delivered by a dominance of Pinot Noir. It has the right age, but it will remain fresh and explosive for some time to come. You can drink it by itself, of course, but you'll be surprised to experience how well it behaves at the table. "Chardonnay: You'll want one that can stand up to cream-sauced pastas or chicken, lobster, pork, salmon or turkey. We recommended Gloria Ferrer's gorgeous Brut sparkler in our Nov. 28 column, and Andrew is just as enthusiastic about the 2005 Gloria Ferrer Carneros Chardonnay ($18), whose light touch of oak didn't overpower pear and peach flavors that were balanced by lemon acidity and a toasty vanilla finish."

"You can easily imagine the cool, misty spring of 2005 in the winery's shy, green apple aromas. In your mouth, those apples taste like they were baked into a warm pie with some lemon zest and a graham cracker crust. "Bright yellow with golden highlights, this classic Carneros Chardonnay has notes of apple, pear, brioche, cinnamon, vanilla, and toasted oak on the nose. Fat, round, and creamy on the palate with lots of fruit, vanilla, and butter, it is very well balanced. Rich oak tannins create a slight drying on the finish, but juicy acidity gives a mouthwatering sensation at the same time. Enjoy as a cocktail with handfuls of roasted and spiced Marcona almonds, with sesame crackers and gruyere, or with Trader Joe's unsalted corn tortilla chips and caramelized onion dip."

This house, better known for its sparkling wines, is turning out some excellent still wines, too. This is one of them. And the one, according to a panelist, that is the "hallmark of Carneros." The juice is totally free run, and the wine has brilliant color with complex and layered peach, pineapple, honey and nutty flavors, with good acidity and length. The alcohol is 13.5 percent. It's truly a great effort.

"Gloria continues to figure out how to make Pinot, after starting life as a sparkling wine house. This Pinot is dry and elegantly silky, with subtle complexities. It's a delicious wine to drink now for its spicy cherry and smoky oak flavors."

91 POINTS
"Medium ruby red color; deep, spicy red cherry and earth aromas; earthy, rich, red cherry, complex flavors, moderate tannin and toasty oak; good structure and balance, long finish. Big and rich with some nice earthy complexity - definitely needs a hearty meal for maximum enjoyment."

Jose S. Ferrer Pinot Noir 2000
91 POINTS
"The initial, heady layers of spice slowly build into the more delicate Carneros red fruit. There's a lean and supple gentleness that incorporates the red and green peppercorn spice, the sharp, seashell edge of the tannin; the sharper elements all read through the firm fruit flavor. A barrel selection by winemaker Bob Iantosca, this could prove inspired with a few years in the cellar."
Wine & Spirits, October 2003
"Well-oaked and moderately tannic, with cedar, vanilla and mocha flavors woven in with plum, cherry and a minty character. Drink now through 2006."
Wine Spectator, August 31, 2003
EXCEPTIONAL
"Huge aromatic wine with leafy/cherry richness and deep flavors in the mouth, and a long fruit-complex finish. Very ripe; needs another year to open up. Try with lamb or beef dishes. A truly great wine, typical of its region."
Dan Berger's Vintage Experiences, February 13, 2003
"Expressive oak and enriching highlights of toast and lees serve as well-placed partners to nicely ripened and relatively buoyant fruit throughout the length of this attractive offering. Medium-full-bodied and fairly fleshy in feel, it smacks of ripe apples and cream in the mouth and sustains nicely in a long and relatively lively finish. It is tasty now, but its ending edge of crispness suggests that it will keep quite well."
Connoissers' Guide to California Wine, September 2003
90 POINTS, EXCEPTIONAL
"Brilliant garnet hue. Cardamom, oak, cherry and bacon aromas. A rich entry leads to a moderately full-bodied palate and a well-structured finish that has very good depth of fruit, youthful tannins and lively acidity. The oak is evident, but not overwhelming. Nice complexity."
Tastings, The Journal of the Beverage Testing Institute, April 2003
"There is a little more of this wine to be found, but like its mates above, it is not a long production item. Its undeniable ripeness and richness give it familial resonance..."

GLORIA FERRER PROVIDES A WINE FOR ALL SEASONS
"An outstanding wine with big fruit up front and nice spices on the back of the tongue. Excellent structure and some dust at the finish. Drink this with bigger meats than most Pinot Noirs."

90 "From a hillside block within Gloria Ferrer's vineyard, this 2003 is fully mature and ready to enjoy, especially if you've just ordered a plate of beef carpaccio or cotechino with lentils. It starts off light and fragrant, with scents of rose and raspberry, then the flavors deepen, feeling saturated without excess extract, supple and complete."

Gravel Knob Pinot Noir 2002
"Appealing for its soft, silky texture and fresh aromas and flavors of raspberry, vanilla, anise and mineral. Drink now."
Wine Spectator, December 15, 2006
"This is one of the more unique pinots I've tasted in a while, with gamey character that screams out for grilled meats. Aromas of cola and blackberry lead to flavors of mushroom, smoked meat and spice. Of course, all of this is framed-up by classic Carneros red cherry. The vineyard is on the hillside just above the tasting room, and this one breaks tradition and shows pretty big muscle for a pinot."
Bradley Gray, Sonoma Valley Sun, November 16, 2006
Gravel Knob Pinot Noir 2001
"Aromas of ripe, spicy black cherry and wild berry along with a dash of spice and herb; it's sleek, with a silky texture and a complex aftertaste that highlights the fruity flavors. Drink now through 2008."
Wine Spectator, August 31, 2005
Gravel Knob Pinot Noir 2000
"Rich, with a concentrated core of earth, blackberry jam, pencil lead and creamy oak, with flavors that intensify and gain depth on the finish."
Wine Spectator, August 31, 2003
92 POINTS
"Medium ruby color; light earthy, spicy aromas with cherry notes; complex flavors of red cherry, coffee, spice and just the right touch of toasty oak; balanced with a lingering finish. This deep, aromatic Pinot is one of two new selections from Gloria Ferrer. The Gravel Knob block is in the winery's estate vineyard and shows well enough each year that winemaker Bob Iantosca chose it for a special designation."
PinotReport, August 2003
"Super-ripe strawberry flavor implies the sweet ripeness of the wine. It finishes simple, the tannins gripping as softly as the edge of fat grips a sirloin steak."
Wine & Spirits, October 2003
"This limited production effort mixes scents of ripe cherries with hints of grasses and brush in a nose that is buttressed by oaky, creme brulee and caramelly notes. Fairly supple and showing a nice bit of Pinot velvet to its palatal texture, the wine continues its ripe ways in its moderately deep, fruity, black walnut-tinged flavors..."

"This wine is pure raspberry, with underlying hints of strawberry, red cherry, violet and blueberry, which give a vivid brightness to the wine. "The soils of this vineyard are rocky and volcanic, and they give this wine elegant red fruit characteristics and a firmly structured mouthfeel," says Iantosca. Anything with mushrooms is my take."

"Medium-deep ruby purple color; deep, rich, earthy, spice and cola aromas; rich, ripe, complex red cherry flavors with savory spice, earth and toasty oak; good structure and balance, long finish. While this is indeed a complex Pinot, it's by no means overdone. Very nice nuanced flavors and great balance."

"Light garnet hue. Nicely reserved aromas of cherry, nutmeg and a creme brulee note. A silky mouthful of raspberry, spicy cherry, cedar and moist tobacco flavors. Forceful finish."
Wine News, June/July 2005
"This wine combines ripe, rich, complex sour cherry and wild berry fruit with mineral, sage and light cedary-nutmeg notes. It gains momentum on the finish, ending in a long, juicy aftertaste. Drink now through 2008."

Rust Rock Pinot Noir 2000
93 POINTS
"Great Carneros Pinot. Fabulously ripe fruity flavors range from raspberries through cherries and currants, sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg. Sweet and earthy, like espresso with brown sugar. Totally dry, and silky all the way down."
Wine Enthusiast, March 2004
90 POINTS
"Deep in tone, with the rich cherry flavor of ripe Carneros pinot noir, this darkens to fig while the texture grows round, plush, seductive. Substantial in the middle, then a bit short in the end, the finish begins to lengthen out with air toward a beeswax and honeyed buzz. Blended from five vineyard blocks on volcanic soils, this could prove impressive with age."
Wine & Spirits, October 2003
"Well-oaked, with plenty of smoky, toasty scents leading to rich, complex core of spicy, earthy black cherry and blackberry fruit. Well-focused, with a long intricate aftertaste, supported by firm tannins. Drink now through 2007."
Wine Spectator, August 31, 2003
91 POINTS
"Medium ruby color; deep berry and cherry aromas, nice spice and clove on nose; nice spicy cherry flavors, cola, cinnamon and clove notes with toasty oak, good structure and balance and a long finish. Complex and concentrated flavors mark this new Pinot from Gloria Ferrer. The Rust Rock Terrace is part of a new vineyard development by Gloria Ferrer called Circle Bar Ranch, located a mile or so south of the winery on Highway 121. This is going to be a terrific bottling as this vineyard continues to mature."
PinotReport, August 2003
"Another in the Ferrer line of small lots, this one joins its mate in ripeness and in the influences of caramel, roasted nuts and ripe grapes in its makeup. It is somewhat softer and smoother in its tactile sensations...its depth and richness make it a winner for now and the next few years."
