Freixenet

Freixenet was formed from the union of two Spanish families with a long winemaking tradition: the Ferrer family, from the Freixenet estate (Sant Quintí de Mediona), documented since the twelfth century and dedicated to agriculture, and the Sala family.

The Salas, who owned lands in San Sadurní d'Anoia, created a firm that took their name, which exported wine to various countries on the American continent beginning in the mid-nineteenth century.

When Dolores Sala Vivé, the founder's granddaugther, married Pedro Ferrer Bosch, they laid the foundation of Freixenet, a brand born in the first years of the Twentieth century. When Pedro Ferrer passed away, his widow, who had a profound knowledge of enology, quite uncommon for a woman of her time, made herself head of the company, and presided over it until her death.

The company has been known from the beginning for its dynamic and innovative strategies as well as its early international orientation, which has impelled the company along a remarkably successful export path. Since 1985, Freixenet has been the top company dedicated to the elaboration of sparkling wines according to the Traditional Method.

Nowadays, the Freixenet Group has its own Cavas and Wineries in the Penedés, Rías Baixas, Priorato, Ribera del Duero, and most recently a winery in Rioja (Spain); Champagne and Bordeaux (France); Sonoma (California, USA); Querétaro (México); and Australia.
