Freixenet -  Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, Spain

    Spumante

Spumante is Freixenet’s newest méthode champenoise sparkling wine. Slightly drier than its competitors, Freixenet Spumante is unique because it is the only true méthode champenoise in its category.

    Tasting Notes

Freixenet Spumante is slightly drier than most Spumantes. Its delicate, fruity bouquet is typical of the wine’s Mediterranean Malvasia heritage. It has a very smooth, silky finish. It pairs well with spicy Mexican or Asian dishes.

    Winemaking

Freixenet produces only méthode champenoise sparkling wines. The wine goes through two fermentations with the second fermentation taking place in the bottle. Freixenet Spumante is aged up to 18 months in a cave. This méthode champenoise technique mellows the wine naturally, so it is smoother, without need of such a high dose of sugar, typical of Spumantes.

"Very round and candied, with a ton of vanilla on the nose. It's made in the supersweet style, as if it's suppose to go with wedding cake or caramel bon bons. Yet there's enough balance to keep it on an even keel, which should make it perfect for those raised on candy-sweet wines and their kin. Certainly not to everyone's liking but not a poorly made wine by any means."

“The bubbles bring up a wash of lime candies from a glass of this charming dessert Cava; the flavor keeps the lime candy not egoing, and adds a hint of ginger. And despite the moderate sweetness, it finished crisp and refreshing. Chill it for a summer night.”

    Blend

Spumante is a blend of three white Spanish grape varieties called Macabeo (50%), Xarel-lo (35%) and Malvasia (15%). Macabeo produces a fairly light but fruity, aromatic wine of medium-high acidity – characteristics crucial to the production of sparkling wine. It is also an important grape in the aging process because its must does not readily oxidize. Xarel-lo yields a robust, high-acid wine and contributes power and depth. Malvasia (15%) gives the wine its touch of sweetness.
